Tasting Notes
Seeing all of the pictures across the valley from Harvest gives me warm fuzzies inside. It’s been an exciting vintage with bud break happening a little late, but the days between bud break and flowering were mindblowing fast. There were some hot days around Mother’s Day to help speed things along. There was a little bit of rainfall mixed in with some hot days, but nothing overly crazy, I would say. 2023 should be one heck of a vintage. The only thing left to do is wait.
What does one do to start the waiting process? Well, popping the cork on an impressive bottle of wine is what I enjoy doing.
Erich’s 2021 Ricochet Wine Company Holmes Gap Vineyard Pinot Noir is nothing short of spectacular! Pouring this wine into the glass, I got the biggest grin for several reasons. First, all those deep, dark red fruits escaped the bottle into the glass. I was also reflecting on the interview on how Erich got Cormac McCarthy’s “The Road” into his English AP class before becoming a winemaker. Are you a Cormac McCarthy fan?
The nose on this wine was intoxicating with a smooth, elegant lead into a mid-palate full of those dark red fruits, making my knees buckle, leaving all of today’s meetings in the past. This is one heck of a wine, and if you haven’t listened to Erich’s interview, all the links are in the Bio!
