Tasting Notes

I had to rush outside tonight to grab this picture before it got pitch black. I can’t believe we’re almost halfway through December, and the Winter Solstice is just a week and a half away. This means I can officially start counting down the days to Spring and Summer! I consider myself extremely fortunate to have gotten to know so many amazing people behind the labels. I knew A.J. and Katie for a few years before ever diving into their wines. We’d run into each other at various events. I remember meeting them at IPNC a few years ago during a Chosen Family Thursday evening event. Earlier this year, I ran into them again at Arabilis’s Sparkling Launch event during the Kentucky Derby. I’m ashamed to admit I hadn’t taken the time to explore their wines in depth until the Indie Wine Mixer a few weeks ago. Sure, I’d tried their wines a couple of times before, but I never really gave them the attention they deserved. Tonight, I’m on day two of the 2022 Throughline Site Pinot Noir. It’s called “Site” because it’s a true expression of everything A.J. and Katie cultivate in their Cancilla Vineyard—including some Chardonnay. This wine is both unique and thoroughly enjoyable. On day one, I was struck by the bright red fruit on the entry, which softened into a mid-palate where those red fruits revealed their full potential with an everlasting finish. On day two, it’s still holding strong! The fruit remains vibrant, and the finish is impressively long. One quality I really appreciate about this wine is that, compared to other 2022 Pinots, it doesn’t present itself as overly bold. Right now, most of the ‘22 Pinots I’ve tasted are showing up big and bold, but this one strikes a more balanced profile. What are you noticing with the ‘22 vintage? 👇 👇 👇 👇 Would you like to get a Saturday morning email once a month to read with your coffee giving you an insider perspective on a winery?
