Wine is a never-ending journey, and for me, I never know where it will lead. However, I am a massive fan of not knowing where the path wavers. Sometimes the sun shines, and other times the rain comes down sideways. Over the summer at IPNC, I was introduced to a California Pinot on Friday and continued to fall head over heels throughout the weekend.
Winemaker Alex Kanzler and his cousin, Morgan, are about as down-to-earth as they come. Alex was doomed to be in the wine industry at 16. Alex persuaded Mogan to move from North Carolina to California to help the family business. She also did a Harvest with Antica Terra in 2020. Season 2 of the podcast will have Alex and his wife Bre coming in 2023 (it’s not that far away).
Tonight’s wine is the 2019 Kanzler Russian River Pinot Noir. Looking at the glass, the wine is deep dark red. On the nose is bright red cherry intermingled with slight dark fruit. On entry and mid-palate, this is not delicate Pinot but has every single classic characteristic of a Pinot, showing smooth elegance through and through. The tannin and acidity structure is firmly in place, and oh my goodness, I can only imagine what this will taste like in 10+ years!
