Tasting Notes
I try not to hype the Saturday morning newsletter too much, but if you are not signed up, you are missing out on a story of a unique individual. Her name is Megan Markel (@the_og_meganmarkel). Not only did she start in the Wine Industry by opening a wine shop where Don Hagge came in to sell his first vintage. She also organizes Pinot Camp and had a once-in-a-lifetime event showing Jancis Robinson (@jancisrobinson) around the Willamette Valley.
If that wasn’t enough, she is pushing the edges of what is possible with a 7% ABV Bubbles offering. I am telling you the newsletter will be out of this world tomorrow (Saturday at 6:10 Pacific).
Let’s talk about this wine. It is the 2021 Well Played Wines (@wellplayedwines) Grace & Pop A Smalls Brut Bubbles. The blend is truly unique, with 25% Riesling, 25% Mueller Thurgau, and a 50% blend of Riesling, Muscat, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Blanc, and Pinot Gris. Of course, there is a pleasing expression of bubbles in the glass! I am unsure what to expect with a blend like this, but here is what I know. It is delicious on the mid-palate, where you start to get a little sweetness from the Riesling but balanced out from the other wines in the blend. With the sun being out in full force this evening, I imagine some serious summertime fun with Megan’s smalls and not getting that mid-day nap time from day drinking. Summer, hurry up already!
