Tasting Notes

There are many wines I read about on a daily basis. Most wines whiz by me, but when one catches my attention, I perk up. Sometime late last year, Owen Bargreen mentioned Horsepower, and I perked up. Going to the Horsepower website, I was saddened to see their mailing list was full. Of course, I signed up for the waiting list, but my luscious, wavy locks of hair might wither away into nothingness before my slot opens up. I scoured the internet day and night until I was lucky enough to find a couple of bottles of the 2017 Sur Echalas Vineyard Syrah in January. Three days ago, I decided to pull the trigger and try it out. Popping the cork on this bottle, my first thought was Marky Mark and Funky Bunch need to seriously step up their Funk game because there is some serious funk going on here. The last time I encountered this much funk was with the Pinots from Rose and Arrow. This is not your normal Syrah, but let me tell you, the acidity, body, and tannins fit together in a sumptuous funky package. Hands down this is the most unique Syrah i have tasted. The 2017 is totally drinkable now, but there is no way I am opening the other bottle for at least 5 more years. . . . . . . 📰 Want to know more about Oregon Wine and Wineries sign up for my weekly newsletter.
