Tasting Notes
It is Friday night which means it is time to pull something special from the cellar. I spotted a bottle of Holloran’s 2014 Ana Vineyard Pinot Noir and could not resist. We were just talking about the Ana Vineyard Pinot from Hazelfern last night, so this felt like the perfect follow-up.
There is a small group of us who know that an eleven year old Oregon Pinot can still be in its prime. I also think there is a larger group of wine drinkers who are a little nervous about what a Pinot that age might be like. First things first though, the cork. I did not even hesitate. It came out effortlessly, completely intact.
And the wine. Holy Toledo. From the first sip to the mid-palate to the finish, it was alive with energy. The structure, the fruit, the elegance, all still there, beautifully intact. I am a little sad this was my last bottle, but also so happy to have experienced the vibrance it delivered.
Holloran holds a special place in my heart. It was one of the first wineries I ever put on my list to visit. On that first visit, I was walking up the stairs to the tasting room as a gentleman was coming down. I asked him how the wines were. He smiled and said, “I hope they are good. I am Bill Holloran, the owner.” That moment stuck with me.
Since then, I have come to respect not only the wines Bill makes but also the care and commitment he brings to the vineyard and to the community. If you have not visited Holloran, make a reservation. You will not regret it.
